Screen & Recoat vs. Full Sand & Refinish — Which Do You Need?
Screen & Recoat — $2.50/sq ft
Best for: Floors with surface dullness, light scuffs, or finish worn thin in traffic areas — but no deep scratches through to bare wood.
Screen & recoat lightly abrades the existing finish with a screen pad, then applies a fresh coat of finish on top. It restores shine and adds a protective layer without removing scratches that go through the finish into the wood itself. Same-day service — significantly less disruptive and less expensive than full refinishing.
Results: Same day. Foot traffic after 24 hours. Full cure in 7 days.
Full Sand & Refinish — $5.50/sq ft
Best for: Deep scratches through to bare wood, significant staining, cupping or warping, old finish that is peeling or flaking, or floors changing stain color.
Full sand & refinish removes all existing finish and a thin layer of wood via sanding, revealing fresh wood beneath. New stain (if desired) and multiple finish coats are applied. The most complete restoration possible — addresses damage screen & recoat cannot touch.
Results: 2–3 days process. Light traffic after 24 hours. Full cure 7–14 days.
Our Assessment Process
At your free estimate we conduct a thorough evaluation including: scratch depth test, finish adhesion assessment, moisture reading (Pueblo’s climate significantly affects wood moisture content), previous refinish count (most 3/4″ hardwood can be refinished 4–7 times), and species identification — oak, maple, pine, and exotic species behave differently under sanding.
NWFA Certification — Why It Matters
The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) is the industry authority for hardwood flooring installation, finishing, and maintenance. NWFA certification requires demonstrated knowledge of wood science, finishing chemistry, and proper technique for each species. Most general contractors offering hardwood refinishing are not NWFA certified. Uncertified technicians risk sanding through the wear layer, applying incompatible finishes, or improper moisture acclimation causing future cupping and cracking.
Pueblo’s Climate & Hardwood Floors
Pueblo’s low humidity, significant temperature swings, and high altitude (4,695 ft) affect hardwood floors more aggressively than coastal cities. Wood expands and contracts more dramatically here, and UV exposure is roughly 30% more intense at altitude. We account for Pueblo’s specific climate conditions in product selection and application technique — from historic Bessemer bungalows to mid-century homes in Belmont to newer construction in Pueblo West.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I need screen & recoat or full refinish?
Run your fingernail across a scratch. If it catches (scratch is in the wood), you likely need full refinishing. If your nail slides over it smoothly (scratch is only in the finish), screen & recoat may work. We confirm with certainty at the estimate.
How many times can my floors be refinished?
Most solid 3/4″ hardwood can be refinished 4–7 times. Engineered hardwood depends on wear layer thickness — typically 1–3 times. We measure yours at the estimate.
Can engineered hardwood be refinished?
Wear layers of 2mm+ can typically be screen & recoated. Thicker layers (3mm+) may support light sanding. We measure and advise accurately at the estimate.
Can you match my existing stain color?
We carry a full range of stain colors and match most existing colors on full sand & refinish jobs. Screen & recoat applies clear finish over existing finish and cannot change stain color.
